Don't Trust the Zero: How to Tell If Marketing Is Really Producing No Leads | JRCMO

Don't Trust the Zero

“We got zero” is a claim, not a number. Verify it yourself, read the trend, and explain every spike.

Don't Trust the Zero is Law 11 of Joshua Ramsey's JRCMO Laws of Marketing. It states that “we got zero leads” is a claim until someone verifies it. Owners remember the leads that closed and forget the rest, so accounts get cancelled over numbers nobody checked. Three rules travel with this law. First, count leads from the CRM yourself and never rely on a remembered total. Second, read the trend instead of the absolute: going from two new prospects a month to four is a 100% lift, even if it doesn't feel like much. Third, explain every spike on the chart and scrub spam and junk referral traffic before anyone reads the report, because dirty data makes you defend the wrong channel. The law cuts both ways. Sometimes the zero is real, and then you own it and diagnose it. Law 11 is the data discipline behind Law 8, the Check-Writing Test.

Is it really zero?

Enter six months of new leads and answer three honesty checks. You'll see the actual trend, any spikes that need an explanation, and whether your number can be trusted yet.

Where this law came from

In one day, two of four clients told me the same thing: zero leads. Instead of taking the zero, I had the team pull the CRM data directly. In the analytics, spam referral traffic was muddying which channels were actually moving. A client who goes from two new prospects to four has doubled. If nobody says that out loud, the only thing he'll remember is the zero.

From a September 2026 internal reporting review.

What it gets you

A defensive meeting turns into a data meeting. You keep accounts you would otherwise lose on perception, and you know which channel actually moved.

Where it bites back

Sometimes the zero is real. Verifying it means you have to own it and fix it, not explain it away.

Questions people ask about Don't Trust the Zero

Why do business owners say marketing produced zero leads?

Usually because they're counting from memory, and memory keeps the leads that closed. Leads that called once, went cold, or came in through a channel they don't watch get forgotten.

How do you verify how many leads marketing produced?

Pull new contacts from the CRM by date and source, match them to calls and form fills, and filter spam and junk referral traffic out of analytics before you read it.

What counts as a meaningful lead trend?

Compare the average of the last three months to the three before it. Small numbers can still be big changes: two to four is double.

What if the zero is real?

Diagnose it in order. Are you being seen? Is the traffic real? Are visitors engaging? Only then ask whether the offer or call to action is the problem.

You shouldn't have to guess which law your marketing is breaking.
