When it comes to design, a lot of people have questions, and it’s really hard to find the right design for your website. But here’s what I’ve come to learn, that there are three main mindsets when it comes to a good design. The first one are coders. And what happens too often is that you, the businessowner, you hire a person or a company to design your website, but what you should be asking is who actually does the design and who actually does the codes. Because these are two different minds that have to come together to make exactly what you’re looking for.

Here’s what I mean. What is a coders’ environment that they thrive in? Now, what is a designers’ environment that they thrive in? A coder, probably more of a dim-litted room with web monitors in front of them, and all they see is numbers and lines of code. But a designer, they’re going to thrive in a bright atmosphere that they get their imagination going, and it sparks some type of motion in them that’s going to get them creatively thinking, right?

So, there are two different people. But what has to happen is that those people have to come together, and oftentimes they don’t know how to come together, that’s why you have the strategist. The strategist helps you, the businessowner, focus on the bigger concept, the bigger idea and strategy that your company needs to communicate.

Every design of every website should be different. You shouldn’t just be focused on looking at the examples that people give you and saying “This is right” or “This is wrong”. You need to focus on your company is and look at the main concept of what you’re trying to communicate with your design or simplification of design.

Sometimes, not having pictures on a website can be better for you. But I’ve worked with a company recently that the businessowner wanted to, or she didn’t really know if she wanted to focus on herself as the brand or the company as the brand. So, we had to work through the strategy that came with what her actual identity would be for her entire company. And as we work through that, then we got a good vision of what her design should look like. And that design developed and grew organically from that conversation.

And that’s what a good strategist should do for you. It’s to focus on what that core concept is, what your core competency is, develop that first, and then the design should flow from that. The coder should be secondary. He should be someone that can take any design and code it for you. But that design element really, really comes when you have a good core concept of what you’re looking for, and that designer can work from that concept. That’s what you need to be focusing on first and foremost, in my opinion.

So, I hope that helps. And as you look at more designs, maybe your eye will be looking for something slightly different and you can start to conceptualize what you’re trying to communicate and how you want to communicate that information. Hoe that helps. Talk to you soon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Design strategy is the process of defining your company’s core concept and message before any visual design begins. Instead of copying examples or judging designs as simply “right” or “wrong,” it focuses on what your business actually needs to communicate. The design then flows naturally from that strategy.
Good web design involves three distinct mindsets: the coder, the designer, and the strategist. The coder writes the code, the designer creates the visuals, and the strategist connects them by helping the business owner clarify the bigger concept. All three have to come together to build what you actually want.
A coder and a designer are two different kinds of minds. Coders thrive in a focused environment working with logic, numbers, and lines of code. Designers thrive in bright, open settings that spark imagination and creativity. Because they think so differently, they often need a strategist to bring their work together.
A strategist helps you focus on the bigger idea — your core concept and what your company needs to communicate — rather than jumping straight to visuals. They bridge the gap between designers and coders, who often don’t know how to align. With a clear concept, the design can develop organically.
Strategy should always come first. Once you’ve developed your core concept and core competency, the design flows naturally from it. The coding comes last — a good coder can take any finished design and build it. Leading with concept produces far stronger results than leading with visuals.
